Defining Photoshop Scripts and Their Overall Role
Many people do not make use of the scripts available to them Photoshop software, and that is a big mistake. Scripts can make Photoshop applications work even better than they already do, and they can simplify the work you do on Photoshop, allowing you to do several applications in just one step. And the best part is you decide what you want the program to do. Write your own command scripts and pretty soon, Photoshop will be doing all the work for you!
The first place to start with Photoshop scripts is to read through the scripting reference books for your operating system that came with your software. Reading all of the information is time consuming, but like all things Photoshop, what you put into is what you get out of it. Spending the time familiarizing yourself with scripts now can save you boat loads of time down the line. If you no longer have the information about scripting, you can download a new copy from Amazon for $26.39. If you have the CS2 version of Photoshop, check your scripting folder of .pdf documents giving scripting instructions.
It is possible to download pre-written scripts for common actions directly from other users. For instance, if you want to be able to close all of your open documents without being asked to save them, or if you want to change a document color profile to sRGB, open “save for web†and be able to adjust the color after you close “save for web†you can download scripts to complete these actions free of charge online. For actions that are more specific to the tasks you do, you will need to write the scripts yourself. Follow the advice in the program scripts guide or visit an online tutorial.
Once you have downloaded the script you want, or written your own, you will need to install it in your Photoshop program. Select the “presets†button in your program files and add a copy of the script to that folder. Now, close the program and re-open it and check in your program files – the script should now be present and ready to use. It should also be visible from the menu when you click on “file†and then “scripts.†It should have a .js or .jsx file extension. To run the script, simple choose it from the script menu and double click.
You can also set up scripts you use often to run automatically when “triggered†by a certain event. To set this up, go to “file,†then “scripts,†and then “script event manager.†When the event manager dialogue box appears, tick the box by “enable events to run scripts/actions.†Then, choose an event from the event menu and choose a script that you want to run when that event happens. If the event you want is not already in the menu, type it into the box and add it. Click “add†and then “done†and the script will run the next time the event occurs. To disable this function, you can remove the singular event from the menu, or you can stop all automatic scripts by unchecking the “enable events†box.
To get familiar with scripts, play around with the ones included in your software. The software comes pre-loaded with many options. This will help you decide which applications are most important to you. There is a wealth of resources out there with pre-written scripts for you to download free of charge or for a small fee. And of course, you can always write your own scripts, tailored to your own needs.
