Tell your Photoshop Type to Follow their Path

Type on path is one of the most unique features of Photoshop. Creating text on paths has become one of the most desirable features of the Photoshop software. However, there is no Type on Path tool, because it uses the standard Type tool. To create text on a path, users must draw the path (using a custom shape or the Pen tool), and then use the standard Type tool, which moves the cursor near the path and allows the cursor to change, which indicates that if the user clicks and begins typing, the text will adhere to the path. Once creating text on a path, users may edit that text at any time. When creating a type on path users must select a path for the text to follow, and electing a path for type to follow can be done in more than one way.

Selecting a path component displays all of the anchor points on the selected portion, including direction lines and points if the component selected is curved. The direction points will appear as filled circles, selected anchor points will appear as filled squares, and unselected anchor points will appear as hollow squares. Selecting a path component (including a shape in a layer) can be done in a few ways, including selecting the path selection tool and clicking anywhere inside the path component. If a path consists several path components, only the path component under the pointer will be selected. If users want to display the bounding box along with their selected path, then they must select the Show Bounding Box in the options bar. To select a path component, the user must select the direct selection tool, and click one of the segment’s anchor points or drag a marquee over part of the segment.

Another way of selecting a path for type to follow is by dragging a marquee to select path components. Selecting additional path components requires the user to select the path selection tool or the direct selection tool, and then hold down the Shift key while selecting additional paths. When the direct selection tool is engaged, users can select the entire path or path component by Alt-Clicking (Windows) or Option-clicking (Mac OS) inside the path. To activate the direct selection tool when other tools are selected, the user must position the pointer over an anchor point, and press Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac OS). Changing the overlap mode for the selected path component requires the user to use the path selection tool to drag a marquee to select existing path areas, and then choose a shape area option in the options bar. Using the type on path feature of Photoshop also allows users to add to the Shape Area of the path component also.

To add the path area to overlapping path areas, users must subtract from the Shape Area to remove the path area from overlapping areas. Then, users must also intersect Shape Areas to restrict the area to the intersection of the selected path area and overlapping path areas. Finally, they must exclude Overlapping Shape Areas to exclude the overlap area. Users of the Photoshop software also have the option of showing or hiding the selected path component. There are two options for users that want to show or hide a selected path component. To show or hide a selected path component users may Choose View> Show> Target Path, or they may use the sequence of Choose View> Extras. Using this command also shows or hides a grid, guides, selection edges, annotations, and slices. Selecting a path for your type to follow when using Photoshop software is not an easy task, but using the feature does give many advantages to many users.
